General Electric (GE) is a diversified technology and services company that produces a wide range of products - from aircraft engines and power generation to financial services, medical imaging, television programming, and plastics. GE operates in more than 100 countries and employs more than 300,000 people worldwide. GE currently ranks amongst the top five Fortune 500 companies.

Challenge

GE Power Systems is a constituent unit of GE that uses Primavera P3e project management system for tracking its projects. As many project of GE Power Systems involve tasks that are performed in diverse geographical locations, GE wanted to develop an executive information management solution that would allow its project managers to access the central system that provides project schedule and cost information through the internet.

Solution

iENGINEERING delivered the e-Project Control System web site to GE Power Systems that provides global access to the project scheduling, project time reporting, and project progress reporting modules to GE employees. This web site serves as a one-stop resource for planning, tracking, controlling, reporting, and closeout of different projects. The e-Project Controls System digitizes the manual processes of planning, tracking, controlling, reporting, and closeout of Installation and Field Services (I&FS) projects.

Site Navigation–Easy Access To Required Functions: The web site provides menu access to all e-Project Control System modules including Project Scheduling (Primavera P3e Software), Project Time Reporting (Primavera Progress Reporter), and Project Progress Reporting modules. In addition access to project related documentation is also provided.
 
Project Progress Reporting Module–Monitoring Progress For Better Control:  Progress reports for the current projects are accessed using this module. Users can find schedule, cost, and variance reports in the form of bar chart reports and tabular reports. The reports are generated every week based on the information that resides in P3e and are provided to Project Controls staff supporting the projects.

Project Scheduling Module – Setting Milestones On The Path To Success:  This module is based on Primavera P3e scheduling software. The P3e uses Oracle as a backend database and allows user to enter weekly project scheduling information. The module also provides access to project scheduling reports.

Time Reporting Module–Tracking The Value Of Time:  Time spent (direct man-hours) on a project are captured through the Primavera Progress Reporter application (timesheet module) directly into P3e database. The time is reported on a weekly basis in the Project Progress Reports.

Security–Protecting Information:  The e-Projects Controls System web site provides single sign on access authentication services for all web site users. The application also provides services for managing user access privileges to each business module. The web site provides SSO (Single Sign On) integration with GEPS web site. The web site consists of a back-end Oracle database for preference profile management and other related module information. The web site is Secured Socket Layer (SSL) enabled to provide data security over the Internet.

Site Search – Finding the Required Information with Ease:  A simple system wide project search capability has been developed. The system is capable of searching between e-Project Control modules through a common project information repository.

Technologies

The e-Project Control System has been developed using the Microsoft Active Service Pages (ASP) technology.  Microsoft ASP allows combining standard HTML elements like tables, text, and titles with scripting language elements like database fields, date/time information, and personal customization to produce dynamic web based applications.  The e-Project Control System uses Oracle as the back-end database for the system. The UI of the system provides access to Primavera P3e software through Cirtix NFuse environment.
